Safety & supervision: Use only safe, age-appropriate materials. Outdoor observations should be supervised by a parent, educator, or responsible adult. Do not taste unknown materials, handle wildlife, enter unsafe water, or touch hazardous waste. Substitute models or photographs whenever a real-world site is not appropriate.
Grade 1

Schoolyard Habitat Hunt

Goal: Identify living/nonliving parts and organism needs.

Materials: Observation sheet, pencil, optional magnifier

Procedure: Choose a small safe outdoor area. Count plants, animals or signs of animals, sunlight/shade, water and shelter.

Explain: How does the place provide what living things need?
Grade 1

Clean Water Choices

Goal: Connect everyday actions to clean water.

Materials: Printed or hand-written action cards

Procedure: Sort actions such as picking up litter, dumping oil, planting grass, washing paint into a drain, or using a rain barrel into helps/harms water quality.

Explain: Which actions keep pollution out of runoff?
Grade 2

Mini Food Chain Map

Goal: Model producer-consumer-decomposer relationships.

Materials: Index cards, string, crayons

Procedure: Create cards for a local plant, herbivore, predator and decomposer. Connect them with arrows showing energy movement.

Explain: What could change if one organism disappears?
Grade 2

Rain & Runoff Watch

Goal: Compare infiltration and runoff.

Materials: Three shallow trays, soil, grass/sod model, hard surface, small cup of water

Procedure: Pour equal small amounts of water over each surface and observe runoff speed and soaking.

Explain: Which surface slows water and why?
Grade 3

Biodiversity Count

Goal: Compare biological variety in two small habitats.

Materials: Notebook, tally sheet

Procedure: Observe two equal-size areas for the same amount of time. Tally different kinds of organisms or plant types without disturbing them.

Explain: Which site appears more diverse and what evidence supports that?
Grade 3

Watershed in a Tray

Goal: Model drainage and pollutant movement.

Materials: Tray, crumpled paper or clay landform, spray bottle, washable food coloring

Procedure: Build high and low areas, mark a small colored “pollutant” spot, mist water and observe where runoff travels.

Explain: How does land shape connect places in a watershed?
Grade 4

Heat & Shade Study

Goal: Measure how surface conditions affect local temperature.

Materials: Thermometer if available, notebook, timer

Procedure: Measure comparable sunny and shaded locations at the same times. Record conditions and repeat trials.

Explain: What pattern appears, and what variables could affect it?
Grade 4

Waste Audit

Goal: Measure waste categories and design a reduction plan.

Materials: Gloves for adult-supervised handling or visual-only count, tally sheet

Procedure: Without touching unsafe waste, classify a sample or use a visual inventory: paper, food, plastic, reusable, recyclable.

Explain: Which category offers the best realistic reduction opportunity?
Grade 5

Streamside Decision Case

Goal: Evaluate a land-use decision using multiple criteria.

Materials: Decision matrix, map sketch, scenario sheet

Procedure: Compare two hypothetical site plans using habitat, runoff, cost, access, erosion and community needs.

Explain: Which plan best balances criteria and constraints?
Grade 5

Sustainability Scorecard

Goal: Compare resource plans transparently.

Materials: Scorecard, calculator optional

Procedure: Score two hypothetical resource plans on energy use, water use, waste, habitat effects, cost, reliability and long-term resilience.

Explain: How does changing criterion weights change the decision?
